Preserve To Inspire

At the Museum of Youth Culture we believe that youth and subculture is a catalyst for self-expression and enable positive change for young people. Education is an integral part of what we do, as we equip young people with skills and the power of self-expression to help them think and do “bigger”.

Our educational programme works to instil the importance of youth culture history and to inspire future generations through creative workshops, archival training, and career development.

Find out more about what we do and how to get involved below.

Fully launching in September 2019, the Online Museum of Youth Culture will have an education platform, with e-learning resource and a subculture curriculum.

Schools and Youth Groups

One participant said repeatedly “I absolutely love this”. It was the first time this participant had engaged in a creative workshop through the hostel and became a pivot point in her own self development.

We are offering schools and youth organisations the opportunity for your young people to engage with our extensive youth culture photography archive. Using the archive as a platform to inspire, we aim to connect with and support those young people through youth culture imagery.

We are able to run creative workshops at our space in Canada Water and in your schools, which contribute towards an already existing curriculum structure. Workshops can be tailored to your specific needs, keeping in mind exams and other key dates.

We are able to deliver a diverse and engaging programme of creative-led workshops, including:

  • Portfolio development and careers advice
  • Rework the archive collage and zine-making
  • Introduction to analogue photography and black & white darkroom processes
  • Learn how to curate a pop-up exhibition
  • Introduction to street photography
  • Narrative storytelling through photography
  • Using text with images, including poetry and creative writing

Art Award

We are now an Arts Awards supporter. Young people can take part in any of our creative workshops to help them towards completing their programme.

We run photography skills workshops, offering the chance for young people to display and talk about their work, teach them research methods and archival skills, and allow them to develop their own projects using our extensive archive.
